Background of the Study
Rock art provides invaluable insights into the prehistoric cultural expressions and social practices of communities. In Ikom, rock art sites offer a visual narrative of historical events, religious beliefs, and social structures that are otherwise undocumented (Etuk, 2023). This study examines the significance of these artworks as a medium for understanding the region’s ancient cultures. Rock art not only serves as an aesthetic expression but also functions as an archival medium that records symbolic representations and cultural narratives. The spatial distribution, motifs, and techniques employed in these artworks reveal patterns of human expression that date back centuries (Mfon, 2024). Researchers emphasize that rock art contributes significantly to our understanding of early human creativity and cultural evolution. However, these sites are threatened by environmental degradation and human encroachment. This study integrates archaeological methods with art historical analysis to document and interpret the rock art of Ikom, thereby highlighting its importance for both heritage conservation and academic inquiry (Udo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Rock art sites in Ikom are under threat from natural weathering and human activities, leading to a loss of critical cultural information. The insufficient documentation and preservation efforts contribute to the erosion of these historical assets, hindering scholarly research and heritage management (Ifeanyi, 2023). This study addresses the urgent need to evaluate and preserve rock art sites.

  • To document and analyze the rock art in Ikom.

  • To assess the cultural significance of the rock art.

  • To propose strategies for the preservation of rock art sites.

  • How does rock art reflect the cultural history of the region?

  • What preservation strategies can protect these artworks?

Research Hypotheses

  • Rock art is a significant repository of cultural heritage in Ikom.

  • The artistic motifs in rock art provide insights into historical cultural practices.

  • Effective preservation strategies can mitigate the degradation of rock art.

Significance of the Study
This study highlights the critical cultural and historical importance of rock art, providing evidence-based recommendations for its preservation and promoting greater public awareness of heritage conservation (Akanbi, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The research is limited to the examination of rock art sites in Ikom. It does not extend to comparative studies with rock art from other regions.
